Dr. Golam M. I. Chowdhury is a distinguished neuroscientist and professor with over 23 years of exemplary service at the Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, and the NMR Center. His expertise encompasses neuroscience and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging (NMRS & NMRI), with pioneering contributions to brain metabolism, neurotransmitter cycling, mitochondrial energetics, and the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. His groundbreaking research has significantly advanced our understanding of depression, drug discovery—particularly ketamine as a rapid-acting antidepressant (Chowdhury et al., Molecular Psychiatry, 2017; Biological Psychiatry, 2012) —and neural adaptations to space environments.
Dr. Chowdhury’s research is at the forefront of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) with stable isotope labeling, enabling precise investigations into neuronal activity and metabolic flux. His innovations have led to the identification of critical biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases, including depression, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and diabetes.
